Should a washer go on nut side, or the bolt side? In most cases, when the bolt is easier to turn, the bolt has a round head, which means less damage anyway. For the same reason, retaining rings always run to the side of the nut to prevent the nut from moving. Retaining rings are almost always used with a washer. The nut usually also has a smaller profile than the screw head.

Are washers necessary for proper operation of bolts?

Washers are used on the screws to prevent damage to the surface under the screw head. Without a washer, the screw can cause scratches and tightening problems. When attaching a screw to a surface, using a washer in this location feels natural.
