‘Well-Known’ Attorney Should Know Better

The article by staff writer Luisa Yanez about “well-known immigration attorney Grisel Ybarra,” and placed on the front page of your newspaper, is an attempt to gain sympathy and assistance in pressuring the Miami-Dade County prosecutor to drop the charges against this attorney. This conclusion is reached due to the fact that it is a story that belongs in the Local section and would therefore not be in the Palm Beach County paper at all if not for it being on the front page. Further, citing the fact that brothers, 11 and 16, had their charges reduced and then the reduced charges dropped and comparing that to the fact that the prosecutor is going forward with the charges against “well-known immigration attorney Grisel Ybarra” is not only ridiculous, it is comical.

Ms. Ybarra is an attorney and therefore an officer of the court. As such, she should know that what she did, soliciting money from motorists in the middle of the roadway is illegal. When directed to desist by an officer of the law, she chose not to obey. When approached and told she was under arrest by a law enforcement officer, she chose once again not to obey and in fact wrestled with the officer over the collection box. This is borne out by television cameras.

I find it most interesting that those citizens of this country who want the laws of this land enforced object when the laws of the land are enforced against them. It is others they want to obey the law and not themselves. It is always the “overzealous” police who cause the problem. It is always the prosecutors who are not “fair-minded” who are the problem. It is always the prosecutors who are costing them money for a defense and not their own actions.
