In addition to being one of Europe's most important rivers, the Rhine is also one of its most beautiful. It originates in southeastern Switzerland and the Upper Rhine flows toward Basel, then into Germany where the Middle Rhine Valley is flanked by pastoral towns, vineyards and dozens of castles and fortresses.
Where does the Rhine River start and finish?
The river begins in the Swiss canton of Graubünden in the southeastern Swiss Alps, forms part of the Swiss-Liechtenstein, Swiss-Austrian, Swiss-German and then the Franco-German border, then flows in a mostly northerly direction through the German Rhineland and the Netherlands and eventually empties into the North Sea.
Why is the Rhine River so important to Germany?
The economic importance of the Rhine is mostly due to its role as a waterway crossing large parts of western Europe (with canals to French rivers and to the German Main and DANUBE).
