A brush or carbon brush is an electrical contact which conducts current between stationary wires and moving parts, most commonly in a rotating shaft. Typical applications include electric motors, alternators and electric generators.

What happens when drill brushes wear out?

If the brushes wear down to the end, the metal holders that carry them can cut into the motor armature and cause damage. Any motor that shows big blue sparks, or seems not to have the full power it should is likely past due for brush care.
