What Causes Periorbital

Periorbital edema is swelling around one or both eyes. It is also referred to as periorbital puffiness. The tissue around the eyes looks puffy due to fluid buildup and inflammation. Most of the time, periorbital edema is not serious and is caused by poor sleep, poor diet or allergies.

What causes periorbital inflammation?

Clogged or malfunctioning tear glands can cause inflammation around the eyes. An obstruction of part of the heart called the superior vena cava can cause blood to build up in body parts above the heart, resulting in periorbital edema. Also called pink eye, this viral disease causes inflammation and redness of the eyes.
