Asthenopia is more commonly known as eyestrain or ocular fatigue. It's a common condition that occurs when your eyes become tired from intense use. Staring at a computer screen for long periods or straining to see in dim light are common causes.

How common is asthenopia?

Few studies have addressed the prevalence of asthenopia as compared with studies on other ocular conditions and diseases. However, there are reports of a prevalence of 12.4–32.2% in children below 18 years to 57% in students below 30 years.

What is accommodative asthenopia?

Accommodative asthenopia: strain of ciliary muscle and refractive error. This is probably the most common form of asthenopia seen in uncorrected presbyopic and pre-presbyopic patients with hyperopia as well as in myopic patients that were overminused prescriptions.
