What Does Fvc Stand for in Medical Terms

This is the total volume of the lungs when filled with as much air as possible. Forced vital capacity (FVC). This is the amount of air exhaled forcefully and quickly after inhaling as much as you can. Forced expiratory volume (FEV).

What is a normal FVC?

If the FVC and the FEV1 are within 80% of the reference value, the results are considered normal. The normal value for the FEV1/FVC ratio is 70% (and 65% in persons older than age 65). When compared to the reference value, a lower measured value corresponds to a more severe lung abnormality. (See table below.)

What does a low FVC indicate?

Forced vital capacity can be decreased temporarily or permanently. A diminished FVC value is a sign of several conditions, including: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and bronchiectasis. Restrictive airway diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
