What Does Pseudocirrhosis Mean?

Pseudocirrhosis describes morphological changes of the liver that closely mimic cirrhosis, without the typical histopathological changes seen in cirrhosis. It most commonly occurs in patients with metastatic breast cancer, although it has been reported in other malignancies as well.

What causes portal vein hypertension?

The most common cause of portal hypertension is cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver. Cirrhosis results from the healing of a liver injury caused by hepatitis, alcohol abuse or other causes of liver damage. In cirrhosis, the scar tissue blocks the flow of blood through the liver and slows its processing functions.

Can breast cancer cause cirrhosis of the liver?

To the Editor: Although breast cancer often metastasizes to the liver, associated hepatic failure with cirrhosis is rare. We report an unusual case of metastatic breast cancer mimicking macronodular cirrhosis with portal hypertension, varices, and fulminant hepatic failure.
