What Eats an Oxpecker?

Redbilled oxpeckers only occur where there are animal hosts for the species of insects – mostly ticks – that the birds eat. The hosting animals are generally antelope like impala or kudu, or larger mammals such as zebra, giraffe, buffalo and rhino.

What are oxpeckers predators?

Oxpeckers can be beneficial for their hosts because they produce alarm calls when they identify predators. Some animals such as elephant, waterbuck and hartebeest do not tolerate oxpeckers. Oxpeckers are gregarious birds which use whistles and chattering sounds for communication.

Do rhinos eat oxpeckers?

You think that's ticks they're eating? You've seen it: a peaceful image of interspecies togetherness. The adorable oxpecker, perched on the back of a rhinoceros or zebra, happily having lunch while ridding its ride of pesky ticks, flies and other bugs.
