What Gauge Is Bonsai Wire

It is easier to work with and sold in most online Bonsai stores. Wire is available in sizes from 1-8mm thick (gauges 20 to 2). There is no need to purchase every available wire gauge. We suggest starting with; 1mm, 1.5mm, 2.5mm, and 4mm thick wires.

What gauge wire is best for bonsai?

  • The most commonly used is 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5mm aluminum wire.
  • For small trees you need 100g per strength, for larger 250g.
  • The bonsai wire must be thick enough to hold the branch in place.
  • At the same time the wire must be thin enough to work with it.

What size wire is best for wire trees?

Start gathering your materials, and find a wire to your liking. The thickness of the tree depends on the amount and thickness of the wire, so for a good sized tree (roughly the size of a mug) use 25-35 gauge wire.
