The bicorne or bicorn is a historical form of hat widely adopted in the 1790s as an item of uniform by Europe and American army and naval officers. Most generals and staff officers of the Napoleonic period wore bicornes, which survived as widely-worn full-dress headdress until the 20th century.
What is the purpose of a bicorne?
βThe bicorne (cocked hat) and tricorne (three-corner hat) were striking forms of head covering for men that were reminiscent of eighteenth-century fashion, although the bicorne, being flatter, was more easily carried under the arm when not worn on the head.
Who wore bicorne hats?
This hat was worn by naval officer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, leader of two expeditions to Antarctica. Although now probably most closely associated with Napoleon Bonaparte, the bicorn was widely used in military uniforms from the 1790s.
