What Is a Low Roughage Diet?

A low roughage diet is recommended when you have an area of stricturing (narrowing) in your intestine (bowel). The goal of a low roughage diet is to reduce the risk of developing a blockage that can happen if you eat foods that are not able to pass through the narrowed area.

What can you eat on a low roughage diet?

Bread, cereals, and grains
  • White breads, waffles, French toast, plain white rolls, or white bread toast.
  • Pretzels.
  • Plain pasta or noodles.
  • White rice.
  • Crackers, zwieback, melba, and matzoh (no cracked wheat or whole grains)
  • Cereals without whole grains, added fiber, seeds, raisins, or other dried fruit.

What foods are considered roughage?

Roughage is the portion of plant foods, such as whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, fruits, and vegetables, that your body can't digest. However, it's an important food source for the beneficial bacteria in your gut. It may also aid weight management and decrease certain risk factors for heart disease.
