Texas ash is a small tree, 30-45 ft. tall, of limestone hills and canyons with an attractive, densely branched canopy. Pinnate leaves have brilliant fall color. Leaflets usually 5, rounded, not as elongate as in Red Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica).
Is Texas ash a good tree?
At the top of the good ash list is Texas ash (Fraxinus texensis). It is tolerant of most soils, relatively pest-free, drought tolerant, has beautiful fall color that ranges from yellow to deep reds, and is a strikingly graceful and beautiful tree.
What's special about an ash tree?
Ash trees are special because they can restore natural systems. They readily colonize riparian areas where their roots help stabilize stream banks, their leaves feed both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and their branches provide shade and nesting sites for many animals.
