What Is a Van Wyck

This much we know about the Van Wyck Expressway: it runs north-south through Queens, is 9.3 miles long, and connects the Whitestone Expressway to John F. Kennedy International Airport. It can be the first thing visitors see of New York, upon arriving by air, or the last, before leaving.

Why the Van Wyck was built?

The Van Wyck Expressway was built in large part to relieve traffic congestion at the entrance of the Municipal Airport at Idlewood, now JFK. Before World War II (1939-1945), traffic and housing development in the area had not hampered convenient access to the airport.

How long have they been working on the Van Wyck?

The work began in 2010, but that was just phase one, which, according to the state’s records, was a year and a half late and millions of dollars over budget.
