DEFINITION. Annular skin lesions are figurate lesions characterized by a ring-like morphology. Although plaques represent the most common presentation of annular lesions, lesions may also be macular, nodular, or composed of grouped papules, vesicles, or pustules.

What causes erythema annulare?

The pathogenesis of erythema annulare centrifugum (EAC) is unknown, but it is probably due to a hypersensitivity reaction to a variety of agents, including drugs, arthropod bites, infections (bacterial, mycobacterial, viral, fungal, filarial), ingestion (blue cheese Penicillium), and malignancy.

Is annular erythema contagious?

Distribution is usually on the thighs and legs but can also appear on the upper extremities, areas not exposed to sunlight, trunk or face. Currently EAC is not known to be contagious, but as many cases are incorrectly diagnosed as EAC, it is difficult to be certain.
