Dampproofing is a coating, usually asphalt-based, that is either sprayed on or hand applied to the outside of the wall. Though less frequently recommended in modern residential construction, it is still an acceptable form of treatment in many situations.
What is bituminous waterproofing?
Bituminous waterproofing systems are designed to protect residential and commercial buildings. Bitumen (asphalt or coal-tar pitch) is a mixed substance made up of organic liquids that are highly sticky, viscous, and waterproof.
Is bitumen paint breathable?
It does not work - it is not breathable, and traps water into the structure. I frequently come across Sandtex masonry paint in my building surveys - and every time we need to remove it to allow walls of the house to dry out. The same can be said for Weathershield paint - it traps moisture and has to be removed.
