What Is Blue Beryl?

Maxixe Beryl is a variety of beryl that has a bright or dark blue colour. The colour gradually fades in daylight to a brown-yellow colour, which diminishes its value as a gemstone. Originally (since 1917) it came only from the Maxixe Mine in Minas Gerais (Brazil).

Is blue beryl the same as aquamarine?

Aquamarine, named for the Latin phrase "water of the sea", is the blue to blue-green variety Beryl. Beryl also contains other gem varieties, including Emerald, and some lesser known varieties such as Morganite and Heliodor.

Which form of beryl is the most valuable?

Emerald is the most popular and valuable variety of beryl. It serves as the only birthstone for the month of May. Because it is the world's most popular green gemstone, an alternative birthstone was not designated. Excellent emerald crystals are often more highly valued for use as collector specimens than as gems.
