Gel medium is a white, paste-like gel that will thicken your paint so that it retains brushstrokes ideal for impasto techniques. It also enhances the adhesive properties of the paint, which makes it suitable for collage work. Gel mediums are available in different types, like gloss & matte, and also different textures.
What can I use instead of gel medium?
- Use a clear fingernail polish —kind for acrylic fingernails.
- You may use a floor polish for vinyl or wood.
- Also various “sealers” or “finishes” or “glazes” sold at local craft stores.
- Permanent white glue (PVA) you may use water to thin. it down.
- Polyurethane.
Is gel medium the same as matte medium?
This is the most important difference between Gloss Medium and Matte Medium. Nearly all the GOLDEN Gels are available in Gloss, Semi-Gloss and Matte finishes. Hence, a Heavy Gel Gloss and Heavy Gel Matte will feel very similar in consistency but will dry with different sheens.
