Henequen is a Mexican name of strong and durable fiber cultivated from the local agave plant's leaves. Henequen is extracted, sun dried, brushed and hand-dyed before the artisans craft the material into handwoven bags. Our henequen bags are ethical and ecological products locally handmade in Yucatan peninsula.
What is henequen used for?
Henequen fibre is made into twines and rope and may be used in agriculture and shipping. Coarse henequen-fibre fabrics, produced locally, are employed in such products as bags, hammocks, and shoe soles. The plant is closely related to sisal (Agave sisalana), another important fibre crop.
What is henequen made of?
Henequen, also known as ki in Mayan, is an agave plant of the Agave fourcroydes, species, from which the henequen fiber, or sisal, is extracted. Like other agaves, this plant is easy to identify due to its rosette of long, sharp leaves of up to 5 feet in length.
