What Is Kubernetes Flannel

Flannel is an open-source virtual network project managed by CoreOS network designed for Kubernetes. Each host in a flannel cluster runs an agent called flanneld . It assigns each host a subnet, which acts as the IP address pool for containers running on the host.

Why do we need flannel Kubernetes?

Platforms like Kubernetes assume that each container (pod) has a unique, routable IP inside the cluster. The advantage of this model is that it removes the port mapping complexities that come from sharing a single host IP. Flannel is responsible for providing a layer 3 IPv4 network between multiple nodes in a cluster.

What is the flannel 1 interface?

The main function of this interface (flannel. 1, in our diagram) is to guarantee one of the premises of communication between Pods and their networks (remember each node has a subnet and each Pod has an IP of this subnet), through an overlay of layer2.
