What Is Lawn Coring

Core aeration is a type of lawn aeration whereby a machine (a lawn aerator) with hollow tines mechanically removes plugs or “cores” of soil and thatch from a lawn. Core aeration reduces soil compaction, creating a channel through which oxygen, water, and nutrients can penetrate the soil.

Is coring good for your lawn?

Coring removes a significant amount of root thatch from the lawn, which together with the extra oxygen and free soil space, allows the lawn to reach down further into the soil profile leading to a healthier, more resilient and even more drought-tolerant lawn.

How often should you core your lawn?

You can aerate a sandy lawn once a year, or once every two years. In harsher climates, aerating twice a year will encourage turf growth and health.
