What Is Loop Unrolling in Compiler Design

Loop unrolling is a compiler optimization applied to certain kinds of loops to reduce the frequency of branches and loop maintenance instructions. It is easily applied to sequential array processing loops where the number of iterations is known prior to execution of the loop.

What do you mean by loop optimization?

Loop Optimization is the process of increasing execution speed and reducing the overheads associated with loops. It plays an important role in improving cache performance and making effective use of parallel processing capabilities. Most execution time of a scientific program is spent on loops.

How much faster is loop unrolling?

Unrolling WHILE loops In this case, unrolling is faster because the ENDWHILE (a jump to the start of the loop) will be executed 66% less often. Even better, the “tweaked” pseudocode example, that may be performed automatically by some optimizing compilers, eliminating unconditional jumps altogether.
