Lounge suit is a loose term for women, but it generally means that a formal dress or outfit is required. However, it isn't quite as formal as black tie, so something like a pantsuit or floral pattern could be acceptable. For men, it's a lot simpler and means a suit worn with a tie.
Why is it called a lounge suit?
They were called lounge suits because they were seen as informal, but a gentleman would always want to look his best so they were still reasonably smart. For working-class men, a lounge suit would be their Sunday best.
What does a lounge suit look like?
Basically, a dark suit with a necktie. It can either be single-breasted or double-breasted, a two-piece suit or a three-piece suit. Unlike the dress code black tie, which is very formal and very distinct, the lounge suit dress code gives you a little more flexibility and room to mix up your outfit.
