Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is usually diagnosed on physical examination as a solitary neck nodule. Early spread to regional lymph nodes is common. Distant metastases occur in the liver, lung, bone, and brain. Sporadic MTC usually is unilateral.

What causes MTC?

Patients with an inherited form of MTC usually have a mutation in a gene called the RET proto-oncogene. This mutation is present in all of the cells in their body (a germline mutation) and these mutations cause the development of MTC.
