What Is Nsu Infection?

Non-specific urethritis (NSU) is inflammation of a man's urethra that is not caused by gonorrhoea (a sexually transmissible infection). Symptoms of NSU can be very mild and may be overlooked. Untreated NSU can have serious complications. NSU is treated with antibiotics.

What can cause NSU?

There are many causes of NSU. It can be caused by squeezing the penis and mechanical irritation of the urethra.

It can also be caused by infection with a variety of microbes including:
  • trichomoniasis.
  • Ureaplasma urealyticum.
  • Mycoplasma genitalium.
  • thrush.
  • herpes virus.

Is NSU the same as Chlamydia?

Most commonly, NGU is caused by chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) and can affect both men and women. Another term, non-specific urethritis (NSU) means that urethritis is neither caused by gonorrhoea nor chlamydia. NSU can have some non-sexual causes, such as irritation from a catheter or soap.
