What Is Skeletal Sand

Skeletal sands are made of the remains of animals and plants and generally have not traveled very far from their source. The size of skeletal sands depends on the skeleton they came from and the amount of exposure to wind and waves. Most skeletal sands come from tropical regions.

Where is quartz sand from?

Much of the sand on Florida beaches is made up of quartz crystals, produced by the weathering of continental land masses like the Appalachian mountains. The quartz is washed down America’s great rivers into the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico where it is carried onto the beaches by water currents and waves.

What is an example of biogenic sand?

Usually, biogenic sands are described by their most abundant component — for example, coral sand or coralline algae sand. Some of the components are the skeletal remains of entire organisms, such as the micro-mollusks or the single-celled Foraminifera.
