What Is Skin Integrity

Skin integrity refers to skin health. A skin integrity issue might mean the skin is damaged, vulnerable to injury or unable to heal normally. A pressure wound (also called a pressure sore, bed sore or pressure ulcer) is an injury to the skin and surrounding tissue.

Why is it important to maintain intact skin?

Intact skin is a first line defence against infection. Damaged skin can not only lead to infection in the host, but can also harbour higher numbers of microorganisms than intact skin and increase the risk of transmission to others.

How does good skin integrity protect the body from infections?

Skin prevents infection from outside sources entering in to the body. The skin protects us from heat, cold and the elements. The skin permits the sensations of touch, heat, and cold. The skin stores fat and water to help with shock absorption and to prevent dehydration.
