What Is Solvent Weld Pipe

Solvent welding is a process by which a joint is made by chemically fusing together a pipe and a fitting. A solvent is applied to the surface of a PVC pipe spigot and the inside of a matching bell. In some cases a primer may be used to prepare the surfaces.

What is solvent weld pipe used for?

The solvent cement welds the pipe and fitting together to make a permanent joint. The main difference once the joint has been made is that Push Fit joints can be taken apart again whereas Solvent Weld joints are permanent. Visually, Solvent Weld fittings are slightly more slimline than their Push Fit counterparts.

Is solvent weld pipe different?

They are made of different material. You cannot solvent weld the push fit pipes they don’t react with the solvent. Also, solvent weld pipes have a slightly larger outside diameter than push fit, and will not physically fit into the push fit fittings. They are not interchangeable.
