What Is Spinal Rotation

Rotation is a basic spinal movement in which you turn the spinal column. When you twist your spine, it also bends to the side.

Where does spinal rotation occur?

30-35 degrees of axial rotation occurs to each side of the thoracic spine. The orientation of the lumbar facet joint allows for more sagittal plane motion opposed to rotational horizontal plane motion. Many nerves innervate the muscles for spinal rotation.

What are spinal erectors?

The erector spinae muscles are a group of long muscles that originate near the sacrum and extend vertically up the length of the back. The erector spinae muscles lie on each side of the vertebral column and extend alongside the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical sections of the spine.
