What Is Tamped Concrete

Tamping is one of the last steps in finishing a concrete surface. It is used to compact low slump concrete mix while it’s still wet, making it stronger and more durable.

What is a tamped finish?

A tamped finish for unformed surfaces is produced by raising and lowering the compacting beam in its final pass to produce a surface with ridges at a fairly regular spacing of 20 to 30mm and up to 5mm high.

Do you need to tamp before pouring concrete?

Many modern concrete mixes are made using certain admixtures that make compacting or ‘tamping’ an unnecessary step. You should check with your ready mix concrete supplier if compacting will be required. If compacting is required, then you can use a tamping beam or roller tamp tool to press down on the concrete.
