Which useful trend or statistic stuck out most during your research?

Notorious: Jumeirah Golf Estates hosts this event every year, but it also hosted last week’s Golf in Dubai Championship. At the very least, it doesn’t hurt those golfers that played here a week ago, as they’ll have the course fresh in their minds. As far as the course goes, it’s a long Par 72 that measures nearly 7,700 yards. In order to win here, you have to be long off the tee or really good with your long irons. One other note — there is no cut this week, so don’t be afraid to take a few more chances.

STLCardinals84: In the last eight editions of this event, there have been three players that have won it twice (Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, and an in-prime Henrik Stenson). Does course history matter more here, or is this just a sample size fluke? I’ll lean toward the latter, but it is still an interesting nugget. The cream does tend to rise to the top in events like this one, and this tournament has a pretty stacked field as the European Tour winds down its season.

tjl5124: I don’t typically play a ton of Euro, but this field stood out to me as being particularly interesting. There are a number of recognizeable names towards the top, but the money this week will likely be made with the lesser known value plays. With the lack of content around the industry, it will be difficult to project ownersihp. I’ll be focusing on the more established golfers in the field and try to target guys that are in good recent form and/or have some course history here.

Who is your top contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

Notorious: Wil Besseling – Ownership will be extremely difficult to project this week. For one, we don’t have all of the buzz around the industry to go off of. The number of podcasts and articles will be substantially lower than a regular PGA Tour event. However, I don’t Besseling draws much ownership at $6,300. Many will build lineups strictly off name recognition and this week’s odds and Besseling doesn’t have either of those as a Euro Tour regular that is listed as 130-to-1. He’s never played this event, but did play this course last week at the Golf in Dubai Championship where he made the cut. Pror to that, he posted three top 20 finishes in his previous four events. He currently leads the European Tour in strokes gained off the tee, which should be a huge bonus this week.

STLCardinals84: Thomas Detry – I love Detry this week. Most casual DFS players are going to feel more comfortable rostering the names that they know among the top golfers, so expect the PGA Tour regulars to carry more ownership. That leaves the door open for some of the European regulars (like Bezuidenhout and Macintyre) to be contrarian GPP options. I’ll highlight Detry, who only has one missed cut in calendar year 2020 to go along with five top tens since July. He’s in form right now with back to back top tens in Cyprus in November, too. He ranks 13th on the European Tour in greens in regulation and 4th in scoring average, making him a great mid-range play. Look for him to improve on his 28th place finish here a year ago.

tjl5124: Ian Poulter – It is difficult to predict what his ownership will be, but generally speaking Poulter is never too popular of a play. He comes into this week in good reent form, finishing 25, 12, 5, and 6 over his last four events on both tours. The course history is not great, but I’m willing to live with that and hope that it lowers the ownership. Overall, Poulter one of the more experience golfers in this field, comes at a very reasonable price of 8600, and should have lower ownership. All this makes for a great tournament play and someone I will be targeting in my GPP lineups this week.

Who is your top overall golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

Notorious: Matthew Fitzpatrick – I am just as high on Tommy Fleetwood as I am on Fitzpatrick, but the latter is $1,000 cheaper and has won this event in the past (2016). We’ve seen a number of golfers win this event more than once and Fitzpatrick will look to join that club this week. His recent form isn’t perfect, but he still has two top 12 finishes in his last five events worldwide. He’s not the longest off the tee, but tends to hit a lot of fairways. He’s one of the best on approach and is one of the best on the greens. We just need it all to come together and he could find himself right back in the winner’s circle.

STLCardinals84: Tyrrell Hatton – With the form that he has shown at times this year, this feels like a potential winning spot for Hatton. He’s right there with Patrick Reed as a favorite in this event, and there really isn’t a weakness in Hatton’s game other than the occasional mental lapse. He grades out as an above average player in virtually every statistical measure, though he doesn’t pop as ELITE in any one area. The sum of the parts is better than each individual piece. Hatton won the Arnold Palmer in March and had back-to-back top fives on the PGA Tour after the restart. He won the BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour in October and then had a third place finish back on the PGA Tour at the CJ Cup. His game has traveled everywhere in 2020, and this could be the perfect bow onto an early Christmas present.

tjl5124: Matthew Fitzpatrick – Fitz was the first guy to stand out as a nice value to me at 9900 on DraftKings. He is a solid all around golfer and has great course history, finishing 9, 34, 12, 9 in each of the past four years. He comes in with reasonable recent form with finishes of 46, 26, 12, 7, 42 in his last five events. His lack of distance is a little concerning on this longer course, but he always finds a way to get it done and will be one of the more accurate players in the field. He is a great building block in all formats this week.
