What Is the Chess Layout

The board is placed so that a white square is in each player’s near-right corner. Horizontal rows are called ranks and vertical rows are called files . At the beginning of the game, the pieces are arranged as shown in the diagram: for each side one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns.

How many chess layouts are there?

After both players move, 400 possible board setups exist. After the second pair of turns, there are 197,742 possible games, and after three moves, 121 million. At every turn, players chart a progressively more distinctive path, and each game evolves into one that has probably never been played before.

Does the king go on the right or left?

As White, the King goes right (of the Queen). As Black, the King goes left of the Queen.
