Footwear evidence can be found in two forms, impressions and prints. The impression is normally described as a three-dimensional impression, such as an impression in mud or a soft material; and the print is described as a print made on a solid surface by dust, powder, or a similar medium.
What are shoe prints?
Shoeprints (impressions of outsoles) are a form of evidence that is almost always present at an indoor scene of crime. Footwear evidence can have as much evidential value as a fingerprint but unlike fingerprints automation in matching shoeprints is something that has shown to be challenging.
What type of print is a shoe print?
There are three kinds of shoeprints: patent, plastic, and latent. Patent shoeprints are clearly visible and come from tracking through a substance like paint or dirt and leaving some behind each time a step is taken. A plastic shoeprint occurs when a shoe sinks into a soft substance like snow or mud.
