What Is the Freer Logion?

The Freer Logion is a gloss containing a saying attributed to the risen Jesus. It is found in only the 4th-5th century Greek majuscule ms. of the Gospels known as Codex Washingtonianus (W or 032 in the text-critical apparatus) after Mar 16:14. The ms. is in the Freer Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute.

What is the Washington Codex?

The Codex Washingtonianus or Codex Washingtonensis, designated by W or 032 (in the Gregory-Aland numbering), ε 014 (Soden), also called the Washington Manuscript of the Gospels, and The Freer Gospel, contains the four biblical gospels and was written in Greek on vellum in the 4th or 5th century.

What is a Gospel Codex?

Originally comprising around 220 leaves arranged in gatherings of two leaves, the manuscript demonstrates that Christians used the book (or codex) form for their Scriptures rather than the roll format, from an early date. The papyrus fragments also show that the Four Gospels circulated together.
