This is tty1, one of six virtual consoles that Ubuntu provides. After you have accessed a virtual console, you can use the Ctrl+Alt + any of F1 through F6 to switch to a different console, tty1 through tty6. If you want to get back to the graphical interface, press Ctrl+Alt+F7.

How do I get out of tty1?
To log out in a terminal or virtual console press ctrl-d. To return to the graphical environment from a virtual console press either ctrl-alt-F7 or ctrl-alt-F8 (which one works is not foreseeable). If you are in tty1 you can also use alt-left, from tty6 you can use alt-right.
