Adzes were used by woodworkers for cutting and trimming rough wooden planks and shaping and smoothing wooden surfaces. They thus acted both as carving knives and as planes, neither of which was known to the Egyptians.
What types of objects were adzes used to make?
They have been used since the Stone Age. Adzes are used for smoothing or carving wood in hand woodworking, and as a hoe for agriculture and horticulture.
When was the adze made?
Woodworking toolkits vary widely from culture to culture and time to time: the earliest adzes date from the Middle Stone Age period of about 70,000 years ago, and were part of a generalized hunting toolkit.
