What’s the Difference Between Zj and Wj?

Suspensionwise both models are fairly similar in the front, while the rears are different: The ZJ used a four-link with a track bar, while the WJ used a three-link. The ZJ interiors tend to fall apart, while the WJs seem to be put together with better materials. The early ZJs are also known to have electrical gremlins.

Is ZJ or WJ better?

WJ unibodies are a bit stronger and you’ll get a bit more interior space. IMO, the ZJ rear suspension is a little better design, it’s got more parts in common with other Jeeps and it’s a little simpler in a lot of ways, being that it’s closer to an over-grown XJ.

Everyone has their own luck, and the WJs are not thought of as paragons of reliability. I have, however, had two of them at the 100,000 mile mark and found them to be no more troublesome than the general run of used SUVs. I also consider a sub-$10K 2004 WJ to be a sweet spot of overlanding value.
