The wax cappings used to seal in honey are removed during honey collection, but can be kept, cleaned, and used to make products like candles, lip balms, and skincare products. Even if you're not interested in using the wax yourself, it's worth collecting and clarifying your wax for resale, or to give to friends.
What do you do with wax after extracting honey?
Strain the melted beeswax through a couple of layers of cheesecloth to remove any debris. Remelt and re-strain as necessary to remove all impurities from the wax. The rendered wax can be poured into a block mold for later use. You can use an old cardboard milk carton, for example.
How do you clean wax caps?
- collect excess beeswax – (cappings or crushed comb)
- drain any good honey from the wax – cappings hold a lot.
- rinse beeswax in cool clean water – not your kitchen sink!
- melting is the next step for cleaning – I use water.
