How do you remove dried varnish from metal?

Use denatured alcohol and a rag. It will take a little while but you will not hurt the metal. Simply apply the alcohol and rub the surface until the lacquer or varnish is removed. If you get the denatured alcohol on wood or other materials near the metal it will take off the finish as well.
