A coagulation screen is a combination of screening laboratory tests, designed to provide rapid non-specific information, which allows an initial broad categorization of haemostatic problems.
What does a clotting screen show?
Coagulation tests measure your blood's ability to clot, and how long it takes to clot. Testing can help your doctor assess your risk of excessive bleeding or developing clots (thrombosis) somewhere in your blood vessels. Coagulation tests are similar to most blood tests. Side effects and risks are minimal.
How is a clotting test performed?
A blood sample is taken into a bottle that contains a chemical which prevents the blood from clotting. It is then analysed in the laboratory. There are a number of tests that may be done. For example, the 'prothrombin time' (PT) and the 'activated partial thromboplastin time' (APTT) are commonly done.
