Machines with a mechanical advantage of less than 1 are not used to apply a strong force or lift heavy objects, but are used to increase the distance over which a force is applied. These machines are called "distance magnifiers". Distance magnifiers apply an effort force over a longer distance.
What do you mean by distance magnifier?
A magnifier's function is to assist your eye in focusing closer. Since a 1" focal length lens brings clear vision down to 1" from the eye, an object at this distance is clearly seen and appears to be 10 times closer than it does when viewed from 10" away. Such a magnifier is commonly called a 10X or 10 power.
What do magnifiers do?
Magnifying glasses make objects appear larger because their convex lenses (convex means curved outward) refract or bend light rays, so that they converge or come together. In essence, magnifying glasses trick your eyes into seeing something differently than it really is.
