What's a Motility Test?

Motility Testing (Esophageal Manometry)
Esophageal manometry (also known as a motility test or study) is performed to see if the esophagus is contracting and relaxing properly. The esophagus is a tube that moves food from your throat to your stomach.

How is a motility test performed?

For this test, a doctor will pass a small, flexible tube through your child's nose and into their esophagus and stomach. A small monitor is attached to the other end of the tube. The tube will stay in place for 24 hours. The monitor checks the amount of gas and liquid in the esophagus and signs of reflux.

How much is a motility test?

The cost of a conventional esophageal manometry test can run from around $500 to $1,000, depending on the provider and location.
