Phonic tics are involuntary sounds produced by moving air through the nose, mouth, or throat. They may be alternately referred to as verbal tics or vocal tics, but most diagnosticians prefer the term phonic tics to reflect the notion that the vocal cords are not involved in all tics that produce sound.
What is a phonic tic?
Phonic tics include sniffling, throat clearing, blowing, coughing, echolalia, or coprolalia. Males are affected about 3 times more often than females, and onset usually occurs between 3 and 8 years of age.
What are some examples of tics?
- blinking, wrinkling the nose or grimacing.
- jerking or banging the head.
- clicking the fingers.
- touching other people or things.
- coughing, grunting or sniffing.
- repeating a sound or phrase – in a small number of cases, this may be something obscene or offensive.
