Overview. An ANA test detects antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in your blood. Your immune system normally makes antibodies to help you fight infection. In contrast, antinuclear antibodies often attack your body's own tissues — specifically targeting each cell's nucleus.
What infections cause positive ANA?
Conditions that usually cause a positive ANA test include:
- Systemic lupus erythematosus.
- Sjögren's syndrome -- a disease that causes dry eyes and mouth.
- Scleroderma -- a connective tissue disease.
- Rheumatoid arthritis -- this causes joint damage, pain, and swelling.
- Polymyositis -- a disease that causes muscle weakness.
What does an ANA screen tell you?
An ANA test looks for antinuclear antibodies in your blood. If the test finds antinuclear antibodies in your blood, it may mean you have an autoimmune disorder. An autoimmune disorder causes your immune system to attack your own cells, tissues, and/or organs by mistake.
