The Doge Dog is actually named Kabosu. It turns out that she's named after a popular fruit in Japan. She became the meme we know today after the owner, a teacher who calls herself Kabosu Mama on her pet blog, adopted Kabosu back in November 2008.
Why are Doges not dogs?
The intentional misspelling of dog as doge for comedic value goes back to 2005, when it was used in an episode of the web series Homestar Runner. The story of the doge meme begins in February 2010, when Atsuko Sato, a Japanese kindergarten teacher, posted photos on her blog of her pet dog Kabosu, a Shiba Inu.
How old is Kabosu?
The particular Shiba from the photo is called Kabosu (a kind of citrus fruit in Japan), a 14-year-old dog who was rescued from a kill shelter.
