When Are Bracken Spores Released?

Bracken spores were consistently found in spore traps more than 1 km from the nearest bracken. There are large areas of bracken in the UK, espe- cially on marginal land. Thus, there is potential for the release of large numbers of bracken spores into the atmo- sphere from August until October.

People are advised not to walk through bracken when it is sporing, although since it spores only every 10 years or so in late summer, this is no great hardship.

Unlike many ferns, bracken dies back in winter, leaving brown, withered fronds that pepper the landscape. In the spring, the tightly curled fronds appear, grow and unfurl.
