Premier League clubs have been handed a boost with teams able to name nine substitutes on the bench next season. The rule started when the Premier League returned for Project Restart in June 2020, before being voted through again mid-way through the last campaign.
When can you make substitutions in Premier League?
Premier League clubs are now allowed to include nine substitutes on a permanent basis. Clubs were permitted to name 20-man matchday squads for the restart of the 2019-20 season last June before benches were reduced back down to seven players for the start of 2020-21.
When can substitutions be made?
Substitutions are governed under Law 3 of the Laws of the Game in the (3) Substitution Procedure section. A player can only be substituted during a stoppage in play and with the permission of the referee.
