By the beginning of 1938 Japan had extended its territory from the north of China into Shanghai, Nanjing, Xuzhou, Wuhan and vast areas of the middle and coastal areas of China. The Japanese had soundly defeated the GMD and the CCP forces and conquered many of China's most populous and industrious cities.
