Mating season takes place between March and May. Thirty to 60 days after mating, the female lays between 4 and 23 eggs in a sandy nest. Eggs hatch in approximately 9 weeks, and the new offspring will be sexually mature within 2 years. Western hognose snakes live an average of 18 to 30 years.
When can Western hognose breed?
Male western hognoses are generally mature and ready to breed at 1 year of age, and should weigh around 70 grams or so (although smaller males have proven to be successful breeders). Females are typically considered mature at 2 years of age, and their weight should be at least 250 grams.
What temperature do hognose eggs hatch at?
Once laid, the eggs should be incubated in an incubator at 84oF. We incubate our eggs in sealed boxes on a moisture rich substrate (such as Hatchrite) to trap the humidity around the eggs. After approximately 60 days the eggs will start to hatch, the first babies to emerge will encourage the rest of the eggs to hatch.
