When Do You Use an S Trap?

The mechanical purpose of the trap is to hold water to prevent sewer gases containing viruses and bacteria from entering the home through the drain. With an “S” trap drain, the trap is easily siphoned dry with each use and the water seal no longer exists. A properly installed “P” trap will always maintain a water seal.

When should you use an S-trap?

The toilet has a built-in trap that keeps the bowl partially filled at all times. Without a vent, an S-trap can allow the water in the fixture to drain so quickly that it often siphons the trap dry and exposes the room to sewer gases.

Where is S-trap used?

S Trap :

This trap is similar to the P. trap and is used for fixing water closets in toilets. The only difference between the P trap and the S trap is that the P trap is used for an outlet through the wall, whereas S-trap is used for an outlet through the floor.
